The introduction of Paddle Steamers, like the Trams, was a major social event that affected the lives of people as well as providing them with a form of transport. In the early 19th century the first Paddle Steamer to be used as transport was ‘Comet’, which ran on the river Clyde in Glasgow. Thousands of Victorians soon began to go `Doon the Waater` (down the water), which referred to a trip down the river Clyde as a holiday break. Paddle Steamers gave people a chance to get away from the smoke and slums of the cities for a day.
